I am currently working on modeling a life cycle assessment (LCA) for 1 m³ of concrete using GaBi. Instead of relying on the default datasets, I would like to model each life cycle stage from A1 to A5 individually to better reflect actual conditions.
As part of this, I want to create a custom cement manufacturing process. My questions are:
Any guidance, examples, or references would be greatly appreciated. I'm especially looking to represent the A5 stage (construction activities like concrete placement) as well.

To model a new cement plant in GaBi for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) from A1 to A5 start by defining system boundaries per EN 15804 standards:
- A1–A3 (Product stage): Use GaBi’s built-in datasets for raw material extraction (limestone, clay), transport, and clinker/cement production. Model fuel and electricity use, emissions (CO₂ from calcination and combustion) and material inputs in detail.
- A4 (Transport to site): Add transport datasets for cement delivery to construction sites using relevant modes (truck, rail) and distances.
- A5 (Construction stage): Model the on-site energy use, water, machinery and emissions during concrete mixing and placement.
Simranpreet Kaur Hi, thankyou for your answer. Do you have any database for A1-A5 input and output flows. I did not find the upstream processes for cement as an output flow(1kg). For example separate processes for clinkerization.
Tran Khai Hi, I have already mapped the above 2 processes in my notebook however I am not sure how to model this scenario in Gabi interface. Do i make separate plans for the above processes and drag and drop to the actual plan having 1 m3 of concrete as final flow(having A1-A4 flows i.e. from raw material extraction to gate of construction)
To model a custom cement process in GaBi for LCA (A1–A5), you can build each sub-process manually for accuracy, but it's efficient to adapt existing GaBi datasets and flows. The process plan editor offers a visual schematic to structure and connect stages. For A5 (construction), use or modify existing datasets covering site activities like energy use, transport, and concrete placement. I believe GaBi documentation and case studies can further guide detailed modeling.
Raja Wajahat Zahoor Khan Hi, thanks for your insights. Do you think making 2 plans like for A1-A4 and then importing that plan to a new plan and adding A5 processes will make sense in this case?
