The control solution in biosorption always shows considerably less amount of silver than test. Silver sorption on glasswares is obvious because of binding with silicates but how to minimize it?
the problem is the negative surface charge of the glass material. pH adjustment is one way to minimize. Pretreatment with cationic surfactants or polyelectrolytes should work. However, you have to rinse with deionized water to remove anions like chloride, bromide.
Thank you very much Sumit Pal and Titus Sobisch for your suggestions and input.
Dear Sumit Pal,
Carrying out all expts at or around a neautral pH may not be a very good option since all wastes samples would not have that pH, thus reducing practical applicability I think so. Also not all sorbents would be effective at that pH. Suggestion by Titus Sobisch us good that we may treat the glassware with a cationic detergent or polyelectrolyte. Do let me know your views on this.
Dear Titus Sobisch,
Thank you for your suggestion. I have been treating glasswares with 0.1% nitric acid followed by a wash with distilled water. It does reduce sorption onto walls may be for further reduction I should try treatment with cationic detergent or polyelectrolyte.
your answer reminds me on the early days of my PhD work, dealing with quartz as adsorbent for nonionic surfactants. Though nasty stuff, treatment with hydrofluoric acid changes the surface. This may be also an approach to reduce silver adsorption. This is just a speculation.
yup... u r correct but every procedure have some particular limitations. and i have no idea of mr. sobisch procedure whether it will workout or not. its true it will occupy and restrict the binding of other things on glass ware. for that i will suggest you to use the Polyethylene terephthalate bottles in place of any type of glass wares. and don't worry u can heat them , use acid any type and also non reactive so ur problem of silver sorption will also rectify... @ Kruti shah
Try soaking glassware overnight in 3% hydrochloric acid solution. The glassware must be rinsed afterwards with deionised water several times. This might help.
