Well, I'm facing some troubles with SPSS. I'm trying to merge 2 files and I will try to explain the problem with a simple example: Let's say I have names of patients in the "master" file, while on other file, I have one column of names (the same names as they appear in the master file) and another one of IDs.
Is there any simple way to replace the names in the master files with the related IDs from the other one?
Any help would be appreciated,

ıf you have same names with your variables in two separate data (names of patients) you can follow below steps
click data
click merge files
click add variables
click an external statistics data file (send your second file other than master in your words)
click continue
click match cases on key variables
click cases of sorted in order key variables
send your patients name key varibles (ın your master data)
click okey.
that is all.
Make sure the lists are in the same order in both files. This can be achieved e.g. by sorting both files on the names. Then create a new variable called ID in the second file. Highlight the ID column in the first file, EDIT COPY and go the second file, place the cursor at the top of the newly created ID file and EDIT PASTE.
Sort the data on the names of the patients for both datasets.
