I am attempting to merge data from a multi-site, multi-wave study as data are collected. Both the cases (ID numbers) and the variables already exist in my merged dataset. The different sites participate in the different waves of data collection at different times, so some sites have both wave 1 and wave 2 data in the merged dataset, whereas other sites have not yet collected wave 2 data. How do I merge incoming wave 2 data when the variable names already exist (from participants at other sites who have already participated in wave 2) and participant IDs already exist (from wave 1 data collection)?
I have tried to use SPSS' merge feature but because I am neither adding new cases nor new variables, the merge process fails.

It sounds like you may want to use the UPDATE command. You can read about it in the Command Syntax Reference manual (Help > Command Syntax Reference). And there are some examples online--e.g., see the Google Books link below. HTH.
