I have a sample of mint volatile water of mint (longifolia) obtaind by distillation and I need to know (only) the mass of essential oil inside the volatile water. I know I can do this with a solvent like Hexane, but need to know the procedure and a publication as my refrence.
If you know how to perform the procedure, then why do you need a reference? You can write your own protocol. Do not you?
I agree. Common chemical procedures do not need reference. Some of them are successfully known and employed as routine in laboratories (for example, the extraction with n-hexane mentioned by you). However, you can use an experimental organic chemistry book as reference.
I am agree with my collegue, you don't need a reference for measuring, you need just separate the essential oil from the water or the solvent and measure the weight of EO (in g/Kg) or the volume of the EO (mL/Kg) and after you can compare with reference (for example for the species Mentha longifolia) cited in the pharmacopeia or other normalization.
