The Poisson ratio can be determined in the static tensile test. For a composite material, it will be necessary to perform it in three directions and to use strain gauges to measure the deformation in the direction parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the test.

This test is described in ASTM D3039 standard.

The Poisson ratio was calculated using the following formula:

v=εt/εl

v=(∆D/D)/(∆L/L)

where (εt) is the transverse strain, (εl) is the longitudinal or axial strain, (∆D) is the change in diameter (mm), (D) is the original diameter (mm), (∆L)is the change in length (mm), and (L) is the original length (mm).

Hello,

In this case, the material is assumed to be orthotropic. Thus, you should conduct tension test in three directions and to use strain gauges to measure the deformation in the three direction. Then use the formula as Fares Mohammed Laid Rekbi mentioned.
