generally I recommend to you to order solid sample holder, which allows measurements at different angles or integrating sphere, which is suitable with to measure quantum yield if you have calibrated light source. If you have thin solid samples, you can use simple test. Put suitable piece of black paper into cuvette holder diagonally - 45 deg to incident beam and output beam. Then you can put you sample into holder and measure it in FF mode. If your sample isn't smooth and glossy then is also acceptable RA mode.

For the trial, you can use anything that can hold a sample to become flat surface. If you need something in front of your sample (facing the incident beam) then use quartz glass which can transmit in UV region. Solid sample usually measured by "Front Face" method, please see attached file for the sample positioning suggestion. I don't recommend 45 degree angle since it is possible that your spectrometer doesn't have filter to cut strong reflection/scattering light. By the way, I also measured high concentrated liquid sample using front face method.
