It has become common to use solvents, detergents or emulsifying agents, such as Tween 20, Tween 80, DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) and ethanol, to facilitate dispersion thereof through the culture medium or in solution. The physical and chemical properties of these agents are important to help in view of the biological activity of the oils, however, one should take into consideration that when introduce an emulsifying agent, this is subject to possible interactions with the test substance, and as having antimicrobial activity.
These effects can be accentuated or minimized depending on the method of preparation of emulsifier oil-agent solution.
