In a recent fourth year course (with a small class size, which matters) the prof awarded a small part of the final grade based on classroom participation. Mind you this was subjective on her part and while I could have easily earned a perfect partial grade, it surprised me when I didn't. On reflection, this was because often when I had a question or comment, I would wait to see if anyone else did, to give them a chance to participate, before I did. I was not being afraid of asking questions, just letting others do so first.
