iam going to prepare 4-chloro xylenol from xylenol in presence of so2cl2 getting 88% yield , we want 90% yield ,some impurity ortho and dichloro forming ,how to avoid ortho , di how to improve yield ?
xylenol is a mixture, which isomer are you talking about exactly.
the phenol and Me group is 2,4 directing it will be difficult to completely avoid the ortho isomer. If the ortho position is next to the phenol, protecting the phenol with a bulky group may reduce the formation of the ortho product
diisomer you may possibly reduce by adjusting the equivalence.
anyway is a 2% increase really that important? This is probably within the range of operational variance
