What I could understand, your both data type will be on ratio scale, as such you can use Perason correlation analysis. If not in a ratio scale, u can use Rank correlation. However i would caution you to base on the analysis result for causation. Pl explore the causation based on theoretical ground first.

Thanks for your answer. Actually I have converted both data to a point process, i.e., whenever there is a licking I put one and otherwise is zero. It's the same for the spike train. When there is a spike I assign one and otherwise zero. 

Also my first question is if there is any correlation between these two point process. I have used cross correlation, and now I want to resampele my spike train to see if the correlation that I see in the cross correlation is real or not and if yes is it significant.

Do you what statistical tools I should use to compare the cross correlation?
