I have prepared water extract of leaves of the plant. I have done the phytochemical analysis of that extract also. Now, I want to know what all the components are present in the extract. Can anyone suggest me methods to know the components of plant and how it's done? Is HPLC an option?
Dear Kailash Chadchan.You have prepared the water extract of the leaves of the plant.You said that you have done the phytochemical analysis of the extract.What is that exactly you have done.I think you must have done some chemical tests. You carryout the TLC studies as per the methods described in standard textbooks of Pharmacognosy.For this you consult one of the pharmacognosy teaching staff of your BLDEA college of Pharmacy.There is special book on TLC of phytocompounds (Atlas of TLC profiles) by Wagner.By this you will come to know what are the different classes of compounds are there and how many compounds in each class.Further you can carryout the HPTLC which will give further clarity on the nature and quantity of the components.

In case your plant in question is aromatic in nature, the volatile components of the plant can be identified by hydro-distilling the plant and analysing the resultant essential oil by GC and GC/MS.
