Anyone have experience in identify the sapwood and heartwood of Hem-Fir and SPF sawn timber by using dye? I found that bromocresol green and bromophenol blue work well on these 2 species but the result is inconsistent. The boundary between sapwood and heartwood is not clear in some wood pieces.

I have tried methyl orange on treated Douglas fir, and it worked well. However, methyl orange did not work well on SPF. Sometimes it could be very confussing to mix up spruce, pine and fir as they are sold in bundle. I don't have spectrometer here, so what can I do is rely on pH indicator solution. I have cross checked a few samples of SPF stained with bromocresol green and bromophenol blue, I suspect that the difference of pH for sapwood and heartwood of SPF fall within 3.0-4.0.
