I am graduate from other major, and now working in computer science and technology, my roomates are mostly researching on image recognition. I want to switch to it and learn how to cooperate with them. But I am still out of way.
Please help me how to gain the access to image recognition. I am skilled at nature inspired algorithms now. I have read some papers on image segmation but I don't know what to do. If you are skilled, could you show me a way?

I would suggest that you first start with image processing which will show you how to first prepare the image for recognition. This will usually include image acquisition and storage as well as basic algorithms on cleaning up noisy images, scaling images, salient feature detection, etc.
After reading about image processing you can then start with image recognition. In this area I would advice that you first learn "traditional" image recognition techniques before using machine learning techniques for image recognition. This will help you understand what you should be looking for in a machine learning algorithm processing.

Start with a book which deals with the theoretical concepts as well as the practical implementations together for example "digital image processing using matlab" by gonzalez and woods

Matlab has many examples in different areas. This way you can look for suitable examples first. After that, look at the relevant literature (its list is often placed in the example comments...)
thanks, everybody. I hope I have the time to try and in fact, I have bought the books and stored the websites for it. And now I also think I ams an expert with Python now. I think I might be ready for invovement?
Since you mentioned you have knowledge in algorithms, it is very easy to build a face recognition app. All you need now is to choose a programming language, database and finally a suitable algorithm and then start working gradually. My advice to you is to review the published research to know the methods used to build this type of project. If you need more advice, you can contact me and I will help you.
Have a look at PyImageSearch (https://www.pyimagesearch.com). The blog has some very good tutorials on image processing, and the author also has some books you might find relevant. It gives a good overview of the applications of image processing and what is possible, even if you don't complete the tutorials. (Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with PyImageSearch in any way, but I do enjoy the content).
I think you first need to decide what you want to do. Narrow down the field. For example: Are you looking at medical images or natural photographs? Do you want to classify images or segment objects or track objects in videos?
