I want to conduct harness test on a small piece of metal strip in different layers i.e at mid plane, top surface and bottom surface. How should be experiment conducted to find hardness value at mid plane?

You could prepare a cross section of your piece And then perform micro hardness testing at differen
It depends on strip thickness. If you have at least 1 mm you have to prepair end face where all layers are available for testing. If you have very thin strip, you can try to remove material from side surface (upper and lower). In this case, be careful, because mechanical tools may add hardness to treated material surfaces, hence, use chemical liquids for thin layers removing.
