What I can see i surface of polymer/ceramic/metal, which was prepared via cracking way - I suppose. As I remember, few years ago I had some project according to nanoparticles and they was 10 - 50 nm eq. diameter. It is really difficult to see nanoparticles on scan 4x4 um. Try to make smaller scan 0.5x0.5 um. It will be much more easier because Z range will be lower to. I attached image I made aprox. 15 years ago: nanoparticles on mica. Taking into consideration the way of preparation, note this is the key for AFM imaging. Without good prepared sample, AFM will not work as one expect. Depends on matrix (I do not know what it was) I think Tapping Mode and Phase Imaging may give you best results. Choose tip with frequency 100 - 200 KHz (my preferred are APP NANO ACTSA), what is enough for play with PhaseImaging frequencies, but with standard resonant frequency it may be ok, too.
