We are doing research on one drug which has powerful sedative effect. But recent clinical researches indicated that this drug had analgesic effect. We are planning to test this analgesic effect in mice or rat. But we don't know how to exclude the sedative effect on its analgesic effect. Could you give us some suggestions?

Why are you doing this in rodents and not human volunteers? Finding the effect in rodents is virtually impossible. Your best hope is to find an effect before sedation sets in or after the volunteers wake up. You could do that using a pain threshold model such as a laser heat test since that is by far the most sensitive and reliable of the threshold models.. The methodology is reported in : Sutton JA, Gillin WP, Grattan TJ, Clarke GD and Kilminster SG. (2002). A new laser pain threshold model detects a faster onset of action from a liquid formulation of 1 gram paracetamol than an equivalent tablet formulation. Br J Clin Pharmacol, 53, 43-7
