I have closed population capture-recapture data from photo-identification for a period of 12 encounter occasions (months) that I want to estimate overall and monthly abundance for. Heterogeneity of data needs to be considered as the capture probability is not identical across individuals or time. I've been looking at a few heterogeneity models in MARK/CAPTURE feature within MARK for data types of closed populations. However, estimates appear to be hugely overestimated for all models and provide overall abundance only. I've seen similar papers where monthly abundance was estimated using the jackknife estimator in the CAPTURE feature in MARK. I have attempted to run this in MARK via 'Test' -> 'Program CAPTURE' -> 'Jackknife - M(h)' but the output does not seem to show monthly estimates. Does anyone have any pointers or advise in this regard?

I have been wondering about Mark-Recapture method too. This method cannot be applied in every situation as animals' behaviors are different. This method is based on equal/random mixing of the marked individuals in the population, which may not be the case in most of the wildlife populations. Every species has its own boundaries and bindings in its population. Even marking may create different behavior and different reactions from the members of the groups/population.

Do have some idea of the cause of the heterogeneity? A colleague of mine has been mixing detections of marked animals with fixed antennas and recaptures in the encounter history, and accounts for the heterogeneity in recapture/resight by using a covariate for animals that were detected on the antenna. Which model are you using within MARK?
