I want to do successively SEM and FT-IR analysis of a plastic film. Dear researchers kindly clarify which is to be done first. In case I am intended to do FTIR first and then after 20 days proceeded with SEM, how to preserve the sample for SEM analysis.
For SEM you have to electrode your samples.
I would suggest do FTIR first, and keep your sample carefully in vacuum, take it out and do the electroding for SEM then. Try to work at a low accelerating voltage in the SEM, otherwise it can spoil the plastic film. NOte that you can do both SEM FTIR simultaneously, because such measurements are done with two different instruments.

For SEM you need to store the sample in the vaccum desicator in order to avoid any oxide layer formation. The oxide layer on the sample disturbs the SEM Imaging. But I am sure it will be difficult to do SEM of the plastic sample, you might have to decrease the intensity of electron beam and perform the Imaging at slightly low vaccum level.
For Imaging I would rather recommend the atomic force microscopy.
What method for film production do you use? Be careful that supporting material on which film is produced may influence that side of the film compared to those exposed to atmosphere. This could create confusion during SEM analysis.

The film is a food packaging material of a commercial product. May I know which support material is used in general for production of food packaging plastic blends.
In that case, you should contact producer for production details. My previous comment was about laboratory made films.
