I have had a number of fruitful written discussions - with me using English, and the other person replying in French, German, or Spanish [or even in Russian or Portuguese]. That would admittedly have been somewhat more difficult with a language [like Chinese] of which I know absolutely nothing.
Computer translations have improved during recent years, but they can and do make some quite serious mistakes.
