write or etch a text in the glass. If you can read the text, it is the upper side, if you see mirror writing, then the lower side. For instance you write "up". If it lies down, you see "qu".
you could cut, make a scratch, write on a little corner of the sample (with a non-erasable pen or engraver) in a more or less invasive way. Then place all the samples before, after the treatment and during the measurement, always in the same way....
