It looks like your focus is on the external environment detection and not the engine/speed control side. As you stated RADAR,Camera and LIDAR are 3 technologies used to map environment at speeds higher than ~ 5ph (ultrasomic comes into play at lower speeds).

Indian driving conditions is too vague - At high slow moving traffic - stop & go conditions - you can use 24GHZ RADAR + Camera for purely obstacle detection / automatic braking or LIDAR + Camera (See Continental products). Lane detection can be done without markings also (road edge) - but for India heavy traffic ACC may not make sense. A highway where ACC comes to play should have enough of information (road edge/markings, vehicle in front, on coming traffic , etc) to develop SW. The bigger question is do you have a market for such a product ! ?

Rajeev I appreciate your doubt about Indian automobile market for ACC. Considering today's scenario, foreign manufacturers launching cars with Cruise control. If Indian auto industry develops ACC technology here in India, then I am sure it is affordable.

The situation is changing in Indian auto market, the customer can afford car upto 15 Lacs, if it comes with huge features and technology. Today customer also thinks about comfort in the vehicle.

About environmental detection, I am considering external factors. For Engine control, technology like 'Micro-Hybrid' is already successful.

Considering traffic conditions in city areas, introducing ACC may result in systematic traffic. If four wheeler starts following lane regulation, we can also hope for systematic driving by two wheelers.

Hello Rupesh, The technology to do this already available (RADAR/LIDAR/Camera). To do a good job you need at least 2 systems to agree on the decision. The actual work / R&D needed would be on the SW side - to recognize objects in Indian road conditions and classify them for needed action. If you are a student, I suggest you take the proposal to a local foreign OEM or Tier1. The Tier1 ones which have the technology are Delphi/Bosch/Continental/TRW/Denso/Autoliv - visit the websites to get the specifics. The camera Tier is Mobileye - major marketshare.

I would suggest to adapt the GPS/GNSS system to assist, India has local augmentation system, which bring precision less than meter.

Some sensor fusion between the camera system and radar would be necessary as camera systems can only function to a certain speed before they become unreliable (e.g. Mobileye and Eyesight by Subaru). The camera can be used for object detection (vehicle, moped, pedestrian), the radar can compensate for the short comings of cameras at higher speeds by assisting in detecting object size, and relative change in object size to determine if the time gap between the subject and lead vehicle is low enough to require a change in speed. 

Your ACC algorithm would have to have a lot of additional constraints factored into it, given the variability of driving/roadway conditions as you well know, but also where that system would be used most often and the driving behavior of individuals in those regions (e.g. lane splitting by motorcyclists and moped riders would have to be taken into account).

An Intelligent Driver Assistance System (I-DAS) for Vehicle Safety Modelling using Ontology Approach

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes an ontology modelling approach for assisting vehicle drivers through safety warningmessages during time critical situation. Intelligent Driver Assistance System (I-DAS) is a major component of InVANET[12], which focuses on generat ing the alert messages based on the context aware parameters such as driving situations, vehicle dynamics, driver activity and environment.

I-DAS manages the parameter representation, consistent update /maintenance in XML format while the interpretation of a critical situation is done using ontology modeling. Related safety technologies such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Avoidance System, Lane Departure Warning System, Driver Drowsiness detection system, Parking Assistance System, which generate warnings and alerts to driver

continuously, for assistance according to context which is integrated in Vehicle and Vehicle 2 Driver (V2D) communications by DVI(Driver Vehicle Interface) had been applied.

The simulation test bed developed using Java framework[21] to generate safety alerts in various driving situations shows the usefulness of this approach.

The response time graph for the simulation of context I-DAS is depicted and analysed. The effective performance of the driving scenarios in various modes like

day and night for single, 2-way and 4-way road scenario for the best, worst and average cases of simulation had been studied. The system works in VANET scenario, which needs to be adaptive for environment changes and to vary according to the context. The presented approach shows the simulation

that can be implemented to all vehicles in real time scenario with promising results.
