Sediment organic matter load and pH effect the accumulation of metals in sediment as well as lime rate.
Sediment works as a sink of Phosporous too. So, Nutrient level of river water is also important factor. Free ions of heavy metals such as Cu , Pb , Fe ,Ni has +2 charge and tend to compound with negatife ions such as SO4-. That is why we need to check sediment pH and % Organic Carbon.
