How to determine the highest eigenfrequency of a DEM (Discrete element model) dynamic system ?

In order to ensure stability for the explicit integration sceheme in the FEM (Finite element method) or DEM (Discrete element method), an upper limit is imposed on Δt:

Δt_cr = 2/w_max

where w_max is the highest eigenfrequency within the system.
