It is well known that in different solvents, the selectivity of the test probe for different metal ions is very different. Sometimes, with a lot of mixed solvents, there is no specific selective ion (But theoretically synthesized probes have specific selectivity for certain ions). Therefore, how to prepare the test solution is more effective?
If you test solution is aqeous, your probe should be in aqueous buffers or in DMSO or DMF, I believe!

I would suggest that its batter to check how test probe interacts to analyte. I mean if its via deprotonation then don't go for protic solvent, as it will protonate the test probe and you will not observe the selectivity. in similar way if you know the probable interaction of test probe and ion, it will make easy for you to choose system for further study.
