The type of study determines the nature of the methodology used and determines the research method. The study types include:

Basic research Pure Research: related knowledge and methods of scientific research methods and focus on the development and testing of research methods. Example: Developing a tool to measure a particular phenomenon such as work pressure

Applied Research Applied Research Use the findings of basic research knowledge and use in providing the benefit of man. Example: Increased understanding of the various phenomena surrounding and affecting the lives of individuals

Descriptive research: It attempts to systematically describe the problem and provides useful information about the phenomenon. Example: Description of staff attitudes towards management

Research Relational Correlational research: trying to discover (or establish) a relationship between two variables or more. Example: The impact of incentives on worker productivity

Research interpretive Explanatory research: trying to clarify or explain why a relationship between two variables or more (how? Why?). Example: Why is the tendency of some individuals towards a positive cause and the direction of others negative?

Research exploratory Exploratory research: trying to explore the phenomenon is not enough information available about. Objective: To discover the dimensions and dimensions of the subject of study in preparation for a study

According to Sekaran (2003) a research design is set up to decide on, among other issues, how to collect further data, analyze and interpret them, and finally, to provide an answer to the problem.

 Sekaran (2003) has identified six elements of research design. They are listed below.

1.      Purpose of the study

2.      Type of investigation

3.      Extent of researcher interference

4.      Study setting

5.      Unit of analysis

6.      The time horizon

Sekaran (2003) wrote:

“The researcher would determine the appropriate decisions to be made in the study design based on the problem definition, the research objectives, the extent of rigor desired, and cost considerations. Sometimes, because of the time and costs involved, a researcher might be constrained to settle for less than the ideal research design. For instance, the researcher might have to conduct a cross-sectional instead of a longitudinal study, do a field study rather than an experimental design, choose a smaller rather than a larger sample size, and so on, thus sub-optimizing the research design decisions and settling for a lower level of scientific rigor because of resource constraints."

Research Design

According to Sekaran (2003) a research design is set up to decide on, among other issues, how to collect further data, analyze and interpret them, and finally, to provide an answer to the problem.

So, based on the problem definition, research objectives, extent of rigor desired, type of investigation and cost considerations of the present study, a survey methodology was used for collection of cross-sectional data in four construction equipment industries and the process involved largely quantitative approach to explain the phenomena were considered. The hypotheses were statistically tested to see the cause-effect relationship between variables (independent & dependent) to understand the predictors of organizational commitment and job satisfaction through regression analysis. This process clearly shows that, the present study is “correlation research design”, because the researcher is trying to find out the existing causal relationship between the variables.
