how old are the cones? How are they preserved?

Usually it is possible to determine conifer cones to genus and species if they are presevred well enough.

Can you post some images of the cones? Then it would be clearer what we are talking about.

The cone samples are from the Canadian permafrost, from Banks Island, Northwest Territories. Based on paleobotanical comparisons the samples are deemed to be early to middle Miocene. They were maintained in their frozen state from the point of collection.  Currently, they are kept in -80C freezer, until they are thawed out for study.  I am grateful for everyone's interest, and am hoping to attract someone with experience in conifer identification.
