We are working with some fossil cones and would like to identify the species, and its closest extant relative, if possible. Is there a method to determine conifer species on the basis of cone morphology and histology?
The cone samples are from the Canadian permafrost, from Banks Island, Northwest Territories. Based on paleobotanical comparisons the samples are deemed to be early to middle Miocene. They were maintained in their frozen state from the point of collection. Currently, they are kept in -80C freezer, until they are thawed out for study. I am grateful for everyone's interest, and am hoping to attract someone with experience in conifer identification.
