Dear Munthali,

I believe you also need some basic knowledge about image classification and change detection. I suggest that you refer to Jensen, J. R. (2005). Introductory digital image processing 3rd edition (4th edition is now available). You will find valuable information that help you understand technical tutorials.

Also, ArcGIS had a good help tool that you can use to understand tools used to classify the earth surface.

IDRISI SELVA is the best software to detect LULC using Land Change Modeler (LCM). It can calculate for you spatial trend of change, change maps, and change analysis. It is powerful tool.

Maher M Aburas  I know the software but it is very expensive for me unless if  you wanna share with the licence. My sponsors cannot buy this software for me. Kind regards

Though a good knowledge has been added by different researchers regarding your query. But instead of Arc GIS I think ERDAS software provide a best statistic about change in landuse landcover. If you have a digitally classified (by supervise or unsupervise method) image for two different periods. There is a tool in ERDAS change detection, you simply put these two images in input and the output image will come up with change statistics that convey about the change as well as transformation of land between classes.

Like Sanjoy Roy said, the software Idrisi is a good choice to carry out the analisys you need/want.

(1) First of all, go for the basic knowledge (common sense) to, later, start with scientific reading :

- GIS: >;

- Remote Sensing: >.

(2) Then, if the ArcGIS is the only software available for you, i believe you should start with some tutorials to learn how to operate de software. You can start with learning how to open files, access the files properties and run the tools (in the toolbox). 

You can start with this tutorial: >. Continue with the other three.

The software's "HELP" is, also, a good option to solve some doubts.

(3) Other important subject is image interpretation. You can start here: >; >.

(4) Then, choose the right kind/type of image you'll use (free or paid, and which satellite) and then read information about the selected one (application and use). LANDSAT imagery can be a good choice.

you may learn to image rectification, suppose you may have using with toposheets first do geo-rectification and then do with image to image rectification(toposheet and landsat imageries), until that you can be calculate  the change detection(area) whether gain or loss.

Hi,

A quick method to see change in LULC (esp if you are interested in seeing the "area" which has jumped from 1 class to another) you should classify your before and after images > convert them to polygons > and then run "calculate area". You can then analyze the total area reduced or increased in each class. You should also try to make a matrix of your values as per time and current class. Hope it helps!

Muntahali, you have to learn a simple package of GIS, may be tutorials/help are already there on ArcGIS but there is a need to understand the methodology that land use types have change over the past and what are the reasons for these changes, what is the directionality of the change over a longer period of time
