I'm working on research that investigates how to achieve awareness of cross-cultural competence in Egyptian-Japanese work places. in order to overcome the cultural differences, communication problems and its bad impact on work environment.
currently, open ended interviews and literature analysis are the main lines, but still cant decide on best method and methodology! any recommendations?
Dear Sara Abdellatif, Can you please clarify your research so we can try to help. What do you mean by Egyptian-Japanese workplaces? Are you comparing "workplaces" in Egypt and Japan? Normaly, in social sciences one can only compare subjects or objects sharing the same time-space scale. If they don't have it convective or contrastive research must be used. Can you please elaborate more on your research subject, data, and inquiry?

*It is mainly comparing differences in understanding and practicing Toyota way and kaizen in Toyota Japan and Toyota and kaizen center in Egypt. how both concepts are being customized whenever toyota goes overseas, how it is affected by people's different cultural back ground and interpretation "concepts' re-contextualization process" and what kind of troubles appear when Toyota enforces their ways while neglecting different environment, people mindset and cultural back ground.
*used data were interviews, toyota books analysis.
*this phase I am planning on focusing on those problems and try to see how to reach to cross-cultural competence in those "egyptian-japanese working together Toyota and kaizen center in egypt.
due to corona, fieldwork might not be applicable.
and not quite sure how to proceed in only literature analysis

It might also help to interview companies employing both Japanese and Egyptians to know whatever problems they have encountered and how they resolved the issues.

Hi, As a suggestion, if you have time you can take out themes from your interviews and then use them as an exploratory study to prepare survey questions and get them filled from a large number of target audience I.e Egyptian Japanese workplaces

In my experience, mixed methods are best, as they combine the broad scope and standardization of quantitative methods with the depth and sensitivity of qualitative methods.
You can see an example of this in our PROCOMDI study, where we combined mapping techniques, questionnaires, interviews, focus groups and artistic techniques to collect information. The challenge then was to integrate the information, but it was certainly very enriching and comprehensive.
