If you area able to read this data in matlab, there is no problem to write it in geotiff format using the same software environment. Then you can open it in any software including ArcGIS, ENVI, ERDAS etc.

The problem you may face, is only geotagging. You can generate Reference file using information given in file. Then you can write you file. No problem...

If still facing problem you can send a test subset of your data to me. I will try to know the suitable way...

gdal can do it and it is open source. The trick is that you need to identify the subdataset that you want to extract first (using gdalinfo), then you can convert to geotif with gdal_translate. More info there http://www.gdal.org/frmt_hdf5.html

I would add to Julien's answer, that if the format is supported by gdal, it should be also supported by virtually any open source GIS, because most use gdal internally. So if you are not comfortable with command line, just use for example QGIS (http://www.qgis.org) to open the dataset, then save it to other format. For one band from the file it is that simple.

It would not be as simple as opening the he5 and saving it as geotif if you want to save multiple bands to single geotif file - for that, there are tools in Raster menu (make sure you have GdalTools plugin enabled), the one which is GUI front end to gdal_translate is in menu Raster/Conversion/Translate (Convert Format)...

Ilia Seredkin Hello. Please note I am not familiar with the satellite product you mention, so I do not know if the result I got is usable at all or not. Also, I'm translating the user interface from Czech, actual names in English may be different, but the meaning should be similar:

I tried with a sample product with filename MLS-Aura_L2GP-BrO_v04-23-c03_2016d302.he5 from https://hdfeos.org/zoo/index_openGESDISC_Examples.php. I just suppose it is the product you are speaking about. QGIS did not recognize the .he5 suffix, but using menu "Layer/Data Sources Manager" (first item in the Layer menu), then using Raster tab and selecting the .he5 file with the filetype set to "All files" I was able to open it. QGIS lists four subdatasets, if you leave them all selected, it opens them as layers in a group named after the file. In map it looks like a thin vertical strip of raster data, projection is "Unknown", so if the data have a map projection you know, you can set it via properties of all the four layers.

Now if needed, it is possible either export separate subdatasets into separate geotiff files, or create a virtual raster first (using menu Raster/Various/Create Virtual Raster) and export that as multiband geotiff. But this would be possible only if you define a SRS (projection). The export is done via "Right-click on a map layer/Export/Save as..."

Another possibility is using opensource SNAP Desktop application by ESA I also have. This app opens the file as a product using general HDF5 reader and allows it to be exported directly into multiband geotiff with no problems. The files also do not have a georeference recognized by SNAP it seems. SNAP is not a general purpose GIS, but a tool specifically for processing satellite data. It is focused mostly on ESA satellite products, but not only.

I suppose NASA also offers similar software for (pre)processing products of their satellites.

Both SNAP and QGIS have multitude of easy-installable plug-ins, it is possible there is a plug-in with reader or tools specifically for the satellite product in question, but I did not investigate this.
