The damping to be modelled depends on the anticipated behavior of the structural systems. If we require to model the damping at low strain levels, the same could be incorporated through Rayleigh damping. On the other hand the energy dissipation and hence the damping characteristics at large strain levels could be adequately represented in finite element models through constitutive material cyclic stress -strain curves.
It depend on the finite element program that u r using. R u modelling with etabs or with a more detailed finite element model such as abaqus, ansys?
