I need an open source software to quantify the growth changes in lower jaw bone in stl files generated from before and after time period CBCT scans. Its possible for me to generate colormap threshold of bony area in question if required, Also, i can change the input file format to vtk or something instead of stl.
Instead of manually measuring linear differences .in fixed areas, i want to see colormap generated superimposing T1 and T2 stl files. The color bar shall show plus minus color range so that at glance we can appreciate growth changes.

I have been trying to solve the problem with Slicer3d, seg3D, shape poulation viewer, but not successful yet.
I think the threshold filoe is same as 3D CAd file which can be used as support document for comparision.
I think You could use Meshlab software, it contains many metrics to compare two surfaces.

Thanks Petr Henys and Olivier Etienne for your kind suggestions. I was able to do the job with help of Meshlab first by aligning meshes and then analysing them with Slicer3D software's shape population viewer module. The problem is solved for me for the time being. Thanks.
Hi, I was just trying to do the same (motivated by my 3D printing efforts) and I just learned about the CloudCompare software: http://www.danielgm.net/cc/presentation.html
I got nice results by sampling the stl meshes by point clouds and then computing the distance. The results can be saved e.g. to ascii or vtk (to visualize them using Paraview, which also worked well).

With our Checkpoint software you can place landmark point sets onto each STL surface, then perform 3D shape analysis on those surfaces which aligns them and shows you the differences of each.
