I have time data of two variables namely speed and torque. I'm checking for correlation between them and the value I am getting right now is 0.39. Given the fact that the torque of an engine depends strongly on speed of an engine. Can i classify this as small correlation?
Raja Vardhan Kothakapu : Your answer (0.39) which implies a very low positive correlation, seems to be right . Although, I do not understand your motivation for correlating these two variables, but the torque should be correlated with the change of speed (which would give a high positive correlation) and not the speed itself.
The low positive correlation might be because the torque causes the angular speed to change in the following ways:
- A constant positive torque will cause the (angular) speed to rise
- A constant negative torque will cause the (angular) speed to fall
- A zero torque will lead to a constant angular speed (in absence of friction).
- A changing torque may lead to an increase or decrease of speed depending on what is the direction of torque.
Srivats Shukla Thanks for your answer. I designed a test signal which includes torque and speed and I want to implement it on the engine. I'm checking pearson correlation coefficient to make sure that each of these signals can not be interpreted from the other signal
Rather than given it a vague verbal label, why not compare with other correlations in your field that the readers of your work will know? (Maybe one higher, one lower). There are some conventions for verbal labels for correlations, but they do not translate well across contexts.
