Hello everyone, I am a university student and I have a specific question about APA 7 citation style, for which I have not found any information online, but first I wanted to give some background and context to make my question easier to understand.

In the APA Publication Manual (7th edition), there is an example where a paragraph summarizes findings from multiple studies (for future reference lets call this text "Paragraph A"). The paragraph is the following:

  • "Play therapists may experience many symptoms of impaired well-ness, including emotional exhaustion or reduced capacity for empathy (Elwood et al., 2011; Figley, 2002), difficulties in personal relationships (Elwood et al., 2011; Robinson Keilig, 2014), lower job satisfaction (Elwood et al., 2011), avoidance of particular situations (Figley, 2002; O'Halloran & Unton, 2000), and feelings of helplessness (Elwood et al., 2011; Figley, 2002; O'Halloran & Unton, 2000)." (American Psychological Association [APA], 2020, p. 277)

Similarly, the manual provides an example with Kilham et al. (2018), who summarize findings from several sources, but this time the citations are placed at the end of the sentence: (for future reference lets call this text "Paragraph B")

  • “Participation in sports has the potential to promote positive experiences for young women through the satisfaction of psychological needs (e.g., competence, relatedness, and autonomy), the promotion of positive physiological adaptations to the cardiovascular system and musculoskeletal health, and the development of interpersonal and leadership skills (e.g., Bruner et al., 2017; Crocker, 2016; Eime et al., 2013; Forcier et al., 2006; Gunnell et al., 2014).” (Kilham et al, 2018, as cited in APA, 2020, p. 282)

According to APA (2020), if we want to cite this summary, we can just cite Kilham and omit the authors mentioned in the end of the paragraph, like this: (for future reference lets call this text "Paragraph C")

  • “Sports may help young women have positive experiences ‘through the satisfaction of psychological needs … and the development of interpersonal and leadership skills’ (Kilham et al., 2018, p. 297).” (APA, 2020, p. 282)

My question is:

If I want to cite a text that is similar to Paragraph A (where the authors are mentioned throughout the whole paragraph), can i cite it in the same way that APA allows when an author places all the sources at the end of a paragraph (like in the Kilham example shown at Paragraph C)? Or should I instead use “as cited in” for every author that is mentioned throughout the text im citing?

Thank you very much for your help!
