I am trying to quantify pharmaceuticals (antibiotics, analgesics, antidepressants, beta-blockers, hormones) in river sediments and have seen many various extraction techniques in different papers. I hope to use ultrasonic assisted extraction with different solvents. Any guidance on testing some methods and help on getting started would be great!
Bligh-Dyer extraction would be the classic way to extract immature river sediments. ( If you google then you will quickly find the Bligh-Dyer methodology). A dichloromethane/methanol solvent mix (9:1 vol) is usually a polar and versatile enough medium for most extractable organic compounds, if you don't want the hassle of a full B-D extraction.. So, steroid hormones, for example, then DCM-MeOH will work well.. The more "polar" that your analyte targets are then the more polar that your solvent mixture has to be (increasing methanol or water content. Good luck.
A mixture of DCM and Methanol works only if you want to characterize the compounds of interest.
