TON=moles of active sites or catalytic sites/ moles of product formed
TOF= TON/ Time =moles of active sites moles of product formed per second
Calculate for Biochar/Activated Carbon
Determine the amount of product formed Use analytical methods like GC-MS, HPLC, or UV-Vis spectroscopy to quantify the reaction product. Express in moles per unit time (e.g., mmol/s).
Estimate the number of active sites Surface Functional Groups: Use XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) or FTIR to estimate the surface chemistry. Metal-Loaded Biochar/Activated Carbon: If metal nanoparticles (e.g., Fe, Cu, or Ni) are present, use ICP-MS or AAS to determine their concentration. BET Surface Area Analysis: Estimate surface sites available for catalysis. Use chemisorption techniques (e.g., CO or H₂ adsorption) to determine the number of accessible catalytic sites.
Calculate TON and TOF Plug the values into the formulas above. If the reaction is time-dependent, use TOF to understand the catalytic efficiency over time.
