i want to do cross sectional study in osteogenesis imperfecta patients. the prevalance is about 6.5 per 100000 live births. kindly help me how to calculate the sample size
It depends on what type of study you want to carry out. If the goal is to generalise the findings then you need to opt for a quantitative study with a decent sample size. I'd suggest that you first identify a few hospitals in your city where these cases can be found and select all of them. You might end up with a small sample anyways but something is better than nothing and the larger the sample size, the more generalizable your results become. In case you are opting for a qualitative research design and want to carry out case studies and focus group discussions, then the sample size really does not matter as qualitative studies are not generalizable.
I am not sure a cross-sectional study makes much sense with a specific rare disease. The quantification will always require an inordinate number of people. If you go after general diseases in aggregate, it would make more sense as we know that about 5% of the population is stricken.
