I have come up with a Savonius turbine design. I need to be able to calculate power output and rpm in, say, a 5 m/sec breeze.
There is a huge range of formulae on the Net. I need something simple and practical - rule of thumb, if you will.
All help appreciated.

Hi. Here are some basic data and formulae for this type of turbine:
* Edge speed depends on how much power is drawn.
* Power is not magically output, it needs to be regulated as a function of speed
* Basic formula for speed of a Savonius: tip speed equals wind speed or less. 5 m/s and 1m radius -> about 45 rpm if a little power is drawn. Proportional to wind speed divided by radius.
* Max power output at 5 m/s: 22,5 W/m2 (rotor total area), proportional to wind speed cubed.

for every turbine there is optimum tip speed ratio.
the optimum tip speed ratio for Savonius rotor is 0.7-0.8.
from this you can calculate RPM of you Rotor.
then calculate the torque of your rotor.
