A good and classical reference is Primack (1980), who used combinatorial analysis to describe overlapping in flowering among individuals of one population. The complete reference is PRIMACK, R.B. 1980. Variation in the phenology of natural populations of montane shrubs in New Zealand. Journal of Ecology 68:849-862.

If you need help to understand how to calculate combinatorial analysis in excel, so see the paper of Mendes-Rodrigues et al. (2009; DOI: 0.1590/S0100-84042009000400022). This paper concerns with calculus about synchronization index inspired in Primack (1980) and it is very didactic.
