M. Dresselhaus has a nice chapter about this very topic. In the first chapter (notably Eqs. 1.25 and 1.26) she gives the relationship between the complex dielectric tensor and a number of important optical properties. The absorption being one of them.
In short, given the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function (eps1 and eps2) you can find the index of refraction *n* and extinction coefficient *k*. Using *n* and *k* you can then find the absorption coefficient (alpha) and many other optical properties.
