There is potentially a huge benefit in building generic models, especially in participatory modelling which are often site specific and resource consuming (time of stakeholders in particular).
However, we found only few papers which describe their approach to build generic models. Do you know any methodology or case studies where they describe how they built a generic model?
Personal experience, literature advice are very welcome!

The best practice for the development of a generic model is to identify conserve property/variable associated with the problem. Then tracking this property in space and time will help to develop a generic model.
Building models is pretty simple:
1) gather data
2) correlate data to identify significant variable
3) plot data and draw a curve (a straight line is also a curve) through it
4) Attempt to understand cause/efect relationship between variables and results
5) propose several resonable rigorous (kinetics, diffusion etc) an non rigorous (numerical curve fit) models
6) fit data and select model form that suits your purpose the best.
