Mindset will determine attitudes and behavior, education must be able to build a positive mindset for learners. How to build a mindset of students through learning activities?
All that being said, if it is the Dweck fixed or growth mindset you are interested in then there is some evidence that simple activities that help students understand that the brain changes when you learn has been shown to have some impact. So a few science lessons on brain structure and function can be useful.
Asmuni this is not a simple question. For a start, are you interested in specific mindsets such as growth or fixed mindset from Dweck or general mindsets such as attributes of a life long learner, critical thinker, active learner, goal setter, etc.
For both, mindset is affected by everything in the students' environment, from the design of activities and the words the teacher uses to the way they say those words. Body language, school climate, relationship with teachers, principal's demeanour and just about anything else you can think of will act on the student's mindset.
So what to do?
make sure teachers understand the complexity and importance of their role in student mindset, and
do activities to help teachers understand the desired mindset so they can be active participants in the creation of the mindset.
One of the hardest factors to change and one of the most important is how you assess or judge student work. There is evidence that standards such as A, B, C or High Distinction Distinction, Credit, Pass etc create a fixed mindset in students over time, where growth measures such as effect size or progress through continua as in reading stages helps create a growth mindset.
Activities in the classroom should be engaging and challenging. At the same time, promote confidence, knowledge of the subject matter and promote soft skills which will all in all enable the growth of students' positive mindsets.
I want to agree with Ivo. One learning activity that will allow you to develop students' critical thinking skills is debating on a topic The following link gives an example of how to set up the debate and the successful results from this learning activity:
How to build a mindset of students through learning activities?
Dear Mr. Asmuni,
Following your question description, besides using the "mindset to attitudes" approach in the learning activities, I think, teachers can also use the inverse approach by implementing the behaviorism learning in particular. I believe, like the cognitive aspects, the behavior ones are also essential during the activities.
Mindset simply 'attitude' of someone or 'way of thinking' of a person. No one is born intelligent (of course there are some exceptions with IQ rate among people). It does not mean that imbecile are useless and fit for nothing. The way children are trained bring them up. Usually some children are hyper active some are a lethargic take some time to develop. If we check the autobiographies of talented personalities they had moderate intelligence during their school days.
You asked a question few days earlier that 'How are effective teaching strategies for undergraduate students'. Whether it is to build mindsets of students or considering ultra modern teaching strategies my point is that 'motivation' of children in a right direction/path or attracting/diverting their minds towards our teaching is the first and foremost step that is crucial in teaching. Once we are succeeded in that automatically we try our level best to set up/build their mindsets. Then today's children are tomorrow's world leading citizens or leaders.
Come across some interesting links, attached the ppt.
Student are different in their performance but in their study program they remain active in the sense that they also wish to come up in their progressive career in the line with their co students.
It is equally the responsibility that the teacher must have the data of their student regarding the performance, their intelligent, their behavior ,their other performing activities besides their own study & students in which mode are corporate with other students & in such line of activities teachers may certainly should a draw a line of demarcation for the respective student so that the necessary guideline may be passed on to the students as per the necessary .
Thanks for your suggestion. But understand the application of behaviorism learning approach tends to produce cognitive abilities and not on the ability to think? Please advise you.
Thanks for share. I agree involving students directly in collaborative research because I also apply it. But I have not succeeded in building a positive mindset for them.
Very often the academic experience is far moe negative than actually admitted. I think authentically dealing with true and relevant problems is essential. Very often the grade plays a too important role.
We can build a mindset of students through learning activities by providing examples in behavior inside and outside the classroom consistently by accentuating the benefits.
To establish a positive mindset to each student it is necessary to study the family background, socio- economic status, individual needs, mental setup, aims and objectives of the study of a specific subject for each of the individual first, then classify them accordingly. Hence take a comprehensive training/ teaching programme/ class teaching separately and apply them according to Vygotskey's Scaffolding Theory of Learning. Thanks to all.
Setting the mindset of students is very important in the teaching and learning process. As a teacher, I make the subject matter less theoretical and abstract. The major problem in social sciences is that most teachers make the subject matter unreal to the learner, thus they lack the understanding of the real life situation. My method of teaching is more of participation and interaction between me and the students. Every subject matter is made real and practical to real life situation.
Mindset refers to the beliefs you have about yourself and your basic qualities. If you don’t believe you can be a genius, then you may not be able to become one. But if you open your mind to the possibility, then your future becomes an unwritten book.
Crucial opportunities for the application of good mindset habits occur in the classroom every day. Students who aren’t encouraged to change their fundamental beliefs about their own abilities may never progress in subject areas that they don’t already feel inclined toward.
I’d suggest using problem-solving activities in the classroom. Problem- solving activities will remind students that problems are unavoidable in our life; problems are not to be afraid of, but there are always satisfactory means to overcome them, or at least to live with them satisfactorily.
I think we need to build common mindset of students, first of all, it's not a simple task is it seems. The more students will work in team the more role they will reveal of each other, I think.
In my opinion, it is important to create an appropriate environment for learning and determine the nature of the activity, which includes the teacher's role and the role of the student during the lesson. Also, it is important to help students to build cognitive structure, mental construction which organized the facts.
