I need to built such a curve in order to calculate critical strain energy density of material (middle carbon steel) from it. Testing are being performed in a special testing setup, which provides rigid strain controled loading. The specimens are cilindrical with circumferential groow of relatively big radius. The problem is how to measure the actual cross-section area, after the moment of crack initiation inside the necking part of the specimen.

Also, is the strain-controlled loading nessesery to obtain correct complete true curve?
