UG civil engineering course students are required to undertake a project work which involves field work, survey, industrial interaction, design, use of smart materials, solid waste management etc
You can go for some real-time projects like construction of grade separators with a different slab design, elevated double-decker expressway, etc. They can even go for any material combinations for concrete.
Instead of more than 50 common papers in engineering curriculum, as a Teacher we should find the student interest from the beginning. We should mold them based on their field of interest like survey, concrete, solid waste etc. Focusing in particular field from the beginning will result a good innovative project in their final year.
I agree with SureshKumar M. In addition, innovation is borne by the knowledge of basic principles/technologies built upon by experience/exposure of a creative body. I would suggest students be exposed to research methods for the beginning of their study. This would expose them to the available techniques, materials and production processes. Building upon what we already know would ensure new innovations.
Give the topics from our side to the group of students and ask them to collect the related material from industry, research organisations, research papers etc.
What I am observing from my students is they are very much enthusiastic and excited to do the given task and bringing quality work.
At PhD level and PG level already some universities introduced Research Methodology in their curriculum ,try to adopt it .Sop at the beginning level their thinking about research certainly developed. Also allow the interaction of GG & PG students while presentationof seminars and projects.
