Hello everybody, each day I receive many invitations to attend conferences in topics unrelated to my expertise. Also, invitations to publish in journals I have never heard, what to do? The same thing happens to everybody ?
So do I - almost daily! I simply ignore them, and place the e-mail in the junk e-mail box, so that the e-mail system can recognize that this is a message I do not want to read.
Thank you Gloria for your question how to avoid if not detect predatory conferences or journals. Let me begin with the predatory costs or expenses of attending predatory conferences or publishing with predatory journals.
A s someone in Africa whose income is very low generally, my biggest challenge would be the charges or the costs of either of the two. To make it worse, some predatory conferences seem to be organized for criminal activities. There are several people who have been conned by the event organizers.
But if you do not have any security or financial concerns or considerations at all, I would advise anyone in that case to publish in such a journal or journals, if you have good articles to publish. All journals have some problems once in a while and no single journal is perfect.
Your article will remain what it is and nothing will affect its content. At the same time, predatory journals are like shallow water which young swimmers begin from before swimming deeper. So they are very good options for novice writers.
We may need to redefine the concept of predatory journals, because a journal by definition, publishes research articles. Any research article is a scientific article or work that is why it subject to peer-reviewing and editing. Anything that is published by such journals should be relevant. We do not have to take all stuff that may be published in them. Some are good.
The same applies to predatory conferences. As a human being, you are expected to attend all kinds of meetings including local community activities. All subjects cover social, economic, political, and environmental issues. And a normal person is expected to be familiar with them in one way or another.
If such a conference ever takes within your vicinity, you may do research on a topical issue which may not be in your discipline and share it with people. What if you become a politician one day or a community leader or someone else who should be all-round in dealing with development issues?
It is possible is possible to safely interact with the predators and check their soul if possible or see through their soul. Before I could read your question on the RG, I looked at a letter who raised a very serious problem with an article which has been in a non-predatory journal, it has published a wrong research article and they have take up the issue with that editor.
My general impression, if you have any possibility of presenting a conference paper or publishing a journal article at a minimal cost or free of charge, if applicable, it is better to participate.
You must work on yourself, make sure your paper for the conference or for the journal is very competitive on its own. You will have to write for yourself and you are your first audience. Share it with others. Any information is important in this age of freedom of information.
That is why social media popular except for the fake news.I suggest you send as many abstracts or papers as possible. Keep your publications as you share it with others. Be a good a friend of predatory journals and conferences which lack criminal minds. Be bless, be loved, be brilliant, be successful, be victorious, be prudent, be radiant, and be triumphant.
I think it has become normal that journals send e-mails wth invitations to publish there; not in every case it is a fake journal; you are not forced to react.
Make sure that the international journal in which the researcher wishes to publish his research has one or all of the following characteristics:
1 - to be indicated in one of the institutions of international scientific registration as an example:
SCIENCE CITATION, PubMed, Web of Science, Biosis etc.
2- To be issued by a publishing house, institution, association or world known university
3. The journal should have an impact factor
4- It should not be newly published, but has a long history of publication, and reference to research published in it is not wrong.
In addition to the publication of scientific journals, some scientific publishing institutions are interested in holding scientific conferences, especially in regions outside the Western world, such as China and South-East Asia, which is another means of profit and has no great benefit or great international attention. It is advisable to avoid such scientific conferences that are not held by known scientific societies and organizations, those that do not have industrial companies, universities or scientific institutions sponsoring or guaranteeing or supporting.
I agree with Hein, it is normal when joutnals are inviting authors. I see in this no problem. I myself is an editor of the journal and very often invite authors. Otherwise how I can improve journal?
