I am trying to perform a seepage analysis of an earthen dam modelled in the picture attached. The said dam was built about 35 years ago and still holds good today. The average water depth on its upstream side (Left Hand Side) is 6.6 meters . And the downstream face (Right hand side) has no apparent face of seepage.
How can I correctly assign the boundary conditions of the dam to analyze the seepage within the dam and to check for its safety and also find the flux within the earthen dam.
I assume that you are using the correct analysis tool i.e. SEEP/W. You can assign the boundary conditions in terms of total head. Simply choose the upstream face where you want to assign boundary conditions and provide the head in that section. You can use the downstream level as a datum. This is a typical confusion while using Seep/W at the startings. Before defining boundary conditions I recommend you align the axis to the exact elevation you have obtained from the topographical map. Then define the boundary condition by applying the head of exact elevation as that of field and assign that to the upstream face. Also, define a boundary condition with seepage face on the downstream. Then for the Flux, it's rather easy to draw the Flux line on GeoStudio 2012 than on recent, so at first, you can learn from the old version.
