Thank you for the response. I know how to determined the shear strength characteristics ( Cohesion, Friction angle). However, concerning the unsaturated shear strength parameters the Modified triaxial cell for unsaturated soils in used in general. The modification is achieved by including the Axis Translation Technique (ATT) so that the pore water and pore air pressure can be measure simultaneously. I case whereby the modified triaxial cell is not available. I would like to know if it is possible to approximate the unsaturated shear strength parameters using the conventional triaxial setup if the matric suction on the specimen to be tested was measured using the filter paper technique.
Although I have never attempted it experimentally but yes if you can measure the matric suction somehow in the conventional Triaxial setup, you can use the same equipment for testing unsaturated soils as well.
You can read the following papers. In those papers, a simplified procedure is suggested to approximately determine the unsaturated shear strength parameter (φb) from the conventional UU and UC test results with certain assumptions. Addition to UU or UC test results, you required c' and φ' of soil. Matric suction you can determine through filter paper technique if axis translation or vapour pressure technique is not available.
Other than that you can do what Nadeem Gul and Abolfazl Hamedani have suggested for accurate estimation.
