Most of the countries are still not opened the school, college and universities because of COVID-19. It is spreading rapidly. In such situation, what are the roles playing by teachers/lecturers to engage students.
Hi! it is possible to engage students through online collaborative discussion sessions, developing online video presentations, conducting online quiz sessions. Teachers can share various useful links with students and after finish watching /reading those contents students can be asked to prepare certain assignments. Thanks
Importance of active methodologies in the times of COVID-19:
bibliometric analysis
Abstract
A terrible CV-19 pandemic strikes humanity, a virus with a high and deadly rate of infection and mortality, which has forced the governments of the different countries to take measures, among which is the suspension of activities in all educational institutions. This measure implies an aggressive and proven migration towards distance learning strategies. The current panorama more than a challenge, urgently requires the training of teachers in the field of active methodologies (MA), in competences and in the domain of pedagogical and technological knowledge of content. Methodology. Given this reality, the purpose is to present a bibliometric analysis of the main MAs, in order to support future studies. The objectives try to quantify bibliometrically with the Web of Science (WoS) and SCOPUS database, build the networks of scientific publications and other relevant data, during the period 2000-2021. The analysis of social networks through graphic representation and visual with the VOSviewer software. As conclusions, it is observed that the main thing is to spread the importance of the educational and pedagogical changes that the world demands after CV-19 and of the future, innovation in the different ways of learning of the new generations and the natural consequences of a globalized world.

Online/Remote learning is the solution that should be continued after COVID-19 has been combated. How much time can be reduced! and how many topics and contents can be easily learned!
During COVID19 as a primary teacher, I used a combination of online, at-home learning and face to face. Then a gradual return to school.
The older students actually rose to the challenge of online learning. We need to look at the way that we teach in the classrooms. Students no longer need the talk and chalk of yesteryear. In the information age, we live in students are able to find information for themselves. It is up to us to help them to make sense of this information and help them to apply it in constructive, innovative and productive ways.
Yeah, of course schools and classes are very important. However, we should be able to also use online / remote learning so that similar situations can't control or prevent us from learning.
That is why we need to teach our children how to learn, so that should this happen again they have to skills to learn in a way that is meaningful to them. Teaching and learning should no longer be content delivery.
Paul: My university plans to open the Fall semester in early August with face-to-face classes. However, the students must sit 6 feet apart. Each class is going to be divided into 2 groups, A and B. The groups will come to class very other session. On the day that a group is not scheduled to attend f2f class, they can watch a video of the lecture on their computer in the dorm room or at home.
The instructor's role has not changed, but the workload has doubled. Now, professors must prepare and present an in-class lecture as well as conduct an online aspect of the same course. It's double the workload for the same pay.
Learning can continue beyond the four walls of classroom. We are employing online technologies to facilitate learning processes. Personally I am almost done with end of semester examinations. The university organizes online classes and it is a new good experience.
Amidst this time of global pandemic, Deped has done its part to reached a thousand number of enrolles even at the most trying times.rescuing teachers and imploring different teaching and learning modalities to implement in the upcoming academic year this coming August 2020.As Teachers and second parents to our students, we are in continous planning and developing different learning modals to cater the needs of our students. Thus, No Student must be left behind.🤩👌
A general solution to keep students engaging with students is to maintain online communication. (1) When relationships between teachers and students are obtained online, teachers and students can start to inform stories or news outside of academic activities. (2) The intensity of academic activities between teachers and students is presented in an interesting way, so that learning remains effective. (3) Invite students to play as well as discussions or make games so that students' enthusiasm is maintained, especially trusting the teacher / lecturer to still be able to benefit between the teacher and students. This certainly can be proven.
I think in school going children have more imagination power so teacher tell any story and moral education and relate all the things to the syllabus. and do creative work like painting, story writing, story telling, and some little things.
In the other side, college and university students are responsible for our future and families, so teacher only do work as a moderator & motivational person. and give some activity and practical work just like software, web designing and creative writing.
During the lock-down, educators learnt and used any tools to keep the students engaged. From my experience, working with secondary teachers, we have converted online lectures which can cause boredom for students to online discussion, where the topic is introduced prior to the session via sheets and articles and during the online session the teacher guide the discussion between the students and at the end the teacher summarizes the main points of the lesson/ session. Moreover, my colleagues and worked to promote the scientific curiosity by sharing short articles and videos. These resources were material for debates between two groups of students who they have to support their argument and counter-arguments with evidences and proofs. So the variety of the tools, resources and learning methods helped us to keep our students engaged !!
The activities are being designed in a way that they are easily accessible over android phones, which parents of most children have, as well as through commonly used apps. Last week, on Saturday, BMC education officer Mahesh Palkar used Zoom, a platform for video and audio conferencing to tell teachers to use technology to ensure regular communication with students and encourage learning . Professors are using various platforms like webex, Google meet and Microsoft teams to conduct webinars.
por medio de inclusión en la formulación de proyectos de innovación y de sondeo en clase sobre como se sienten, así mismo de didácticas activas que disminuyan el stress, se les incluye repasando los protocolos de limpieza y desinfección en el hogar
The opening of classes in the Philippines will be soon. But a lot of questions whether it will be fair or not. Many teachers and students don't have access to the internet and device for teaching and learning. Although teachers are encouraged to follow the Flexible Learning Options, that is still a big question on different factors. In the meantime, I think the most significant individual for students in this time of pandemic are the parents, siblings, and relatives who are capable of teaching at home.
It depends on what level you're teaching at. Online teaching is really the only option during school closures. Primary school children don't have a set curriculum and terminal exam so more discretion can be used when teaching this age group. Teaching secondary school children online can be more challenging in some subjects than others, and some topics are more online friendly than others too. With a terminal exam, normally, at the end of secondary school being the criteria for entering third level to study your career of choice, it is very important that students are given every opportunity to perform to their best. Maybe it's time for a change from the terminal exam to something more reflective of the students years in school, like continuous assessment or assignments?
Schools use online learning via Zoom, Skype, and learning platforms. There are big problems in the organization of the educational process in institutions of additional education (sports, music, art schools, etc.), where online technologies are also used. Universities also use Zoom, Skype, and their own electronic educational information systems. Open access to educational courses of leading universities on the platforms open education, Coursera, etc.
In most of university where the Information Technology System as learning platforms are used, virtual learning (online) through Zoom or other meeting application becomes great solution for pandemic situation. However, there are still an obstacle for technical practical class, because it needs tools and equipment in laboratory or workshop. So the virtual learning is not the answer for vocational schools to train hands on skills. Besides, some students live in area where no internet signal, and mostly of them have no computer facilities in the village where they live.
In Philippines, Department of Education, we applying blended learning. Thus, we could provide different learning delivery modalities for our learners amidst COVID 19.
Maybe your question should had been “How teachers should engage their students at the time of COVID-19?”.
Because if you ask how they are engaging their students, then, the answer- most probably for all countries - should be: about 80-90% of them try to remain in their comfort zone and reproduce the classroom dynamics (% increases from primary to secondary to tertiary education) ... of course if the connectivity is good enough, othewise they try to apply first generation distance learning.
Preprint Measuring the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the Italian...
Teachers should provide digital platforms to children. But increased access online brings heightened risks for children safety, protection and privacy. Teachers should orient the students about how, when and where the internet can be used. Set-up parental control on internet to mitigate online risks, particularly for children.
For educators, the COVID-19 Pandemic is a quintessential adaptive and transformative challenge, one for which there is no preconfigured playbook that can guide appropriate responses.
Education leaders must swiftly design responses – and with specific contexts in mind – as the pandemic runs its course. This brief discusses the second module of a series which presents the results of a comparative analysis of emerging educational needs and responses as the pandemic unfolds across countries around the world.
The overall goal of this series is to facilitate the rapid design process and implementation of adaptive responses to the emerging education challenges, and to protect young people’s educational opportunities during and following the pandemic.
