I am working on anti-reflection and self-cleaning coating of solar PV module glass. How Roughness and porosity are related to each other in nano-particles coatings? and how these factors helps in anti-reflection and self-cleaning phenomena of the surface?
When surface roughness value increased an absorbent of light will be increased too.
When the surface is very smooth, you will observe specular reflection and this appears the surface is shinny. Depending on the surface roughness, in particular if the surface roughness is similar to the wavelength of the light that is incident, the light diffusely scatters in all direction and does not look shinny.
When the porosity of the surface is on the order of tens of nanometers, the contact angle of the liquid increases dramatically. Nanosurface roughness is a standard method of creating super-hydrophobic surface. Thus, the liquid forms quad-ball like shaper and rolls off the surface. This phenomenon is widely known as the lotus-leaf effect. Although this is not called self-cleaning, as it does not catalytically clean line TiO2 nanoparticle containing coating, it nonetheless maintain the surface clean by avoiding the surface to be messed by not adhering the dirty liquid droplets.
