I want to know if we can compare the recolonization of an area by Grey Wolves and the resulting ecological implications to similar process in the forests where Dholes are reappearing. My hypothesis is that the role is similar due to their similar ecology and pack forming behavior/hunting in pack. However I think comparing directly is difficult considering the former is an apex predator while the latter is probably something between an apex predator and meso-predator. Any light on this regard would be highly appreciated.
Hello Yadav; Perhaps looking at their interactions with potential competitors would help. Where they are sympatric with Grey Wolves, what is the nature of the interaction? Intense intolerance would suggest that competitive exclusion is occurring and so the two species would be considered members of the same functional group.
In North America wolves kill coyotes whenever they can, even though they are not members of the same functional group. Of course, coyotes don't attack wolves so the functional hierarchy is clear. In Eurasia the parallel would be between wolves, dholes and jackals wherever there is any sympatry. Your question is really quite an interesting one. Best regards, Jim Des Lauriers
The question is valuable and requires a solution. So I think that their ecological roles are quite similar but, in fact, it seems that some trophic preferences of dhole can differ, as you know they're omnivorous and wolves are mainly carnivorous. You must consider such parameters.
